Find out more about the fab Alice Malcolm Green and her life as Founder of Wick and Tallow.
How did I meet Alice Malcolm Green, Founder of Wick and Tallow?
I had a meeting with my client Fromental and a candle caught my eye. I couldnt but help ask more about the candle. It was black glass with a fuchsia centre and very very cool. It was one of Alice's creations!
A busy mum of one and about to be two Alice amazes me with how she juggles her little one and growing a business which supplies many of the top names in jewellery, fashion, florists, hotels and galleries.
What took you down the candle route?
I studied interior design & textiles, and started designing my own homeware collection, the candles were a huge hit and I started selling them at Portobello Market.
From there we created Wick & Tallow and now Wick & Tallow bespoke where we create bespoke candles for luxury brands.
How did you think up the fantastic name: Wick and Tallow?
We wanted something that celebrated the heritage of candle making. My husband James, designed the logo around the wax seal.
How has it evolved from day one to where you are now?
We initially started focusing on our own brand. But now we are very busy with working with amazing brands and fulfilling their home fragrance requirements. We love the whole process of working with different briefs and designing the scent, glasses and packaging. All of our production is based in the UK. We love flying the flag for British manufacturing.
What's your favourite fragrance?
I love different fragrances at different time of years. However my favourite fragrance will always be the one we created for our wedding, white Rose & eucalyptus. Which we designed to tie in with our floral arrangements and enhance the fragrance. We also gave all of our guests a candle to take home, as a memory of the day.
What do you draw on when you are being challenged to keep motivated?
I think working for your own company is highly motivational. You have to love what you do in order to make it a success. We love growing our business organically and most of our orders are repeat orders or from word of mouth, so that’s hugely rewarding & motivating for us.
Do you have your funniest moment to share with us?
Initially when we first started making candles, we had a lot of trial and error situations in our kitchen. This included different unsuccessful scent combinations, different wax & wick types and one or two contained fires... We eventually got our formulas right but it took a while!
Who and what inspires you?
I really believe that in order to run a successful business it’s a lot of hard work, but you really need to care about the product, clients and enjoy what you do. I’m very inspired by keeping to that ethos and not deviating from it. You have to stay true to why you started the business in the first place.
Do you have a daily ritual which is an important part of running a growing business?
Having a young toddler and another baby due in December, you have to be very organised and write a lot of lists! I have quite a strict routine which is based around childcare. I also enjoy a daily swim, which I find great for head space.
Chocolate Brownie or Hot Chocolate?
I love both! But at this time of year I love hot chocolate!
If you could make your own chocolate bar what flavour would it be and why?
I’m really into salted caramel now, I also love dark chocolate. I’ve always loved your chocolate with sea salt!
